THE ROLE OF AI AND AUTOMATION IN HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT IN SRILANKA

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and automation are transforming Human Resource Management (HRM) worldwide, including in Sri Lanka. As firms pursue efficiency and competitiveness, the integration of AI into HR procedures has emerged as a strategic necessity. This article examines the present state of AI and automation in Sri Lankan human resource management, emphasizing difficulties, adoption trends, advantages, and future possibilities.

Vision for the National AI Strategy:

The government's next Digital Strategy 2030 will be closely linked with the National AI Strategy that is being prepared.  With responsible AI development and use acting as catalysts for the creation of a digitally empowered society, this strategic alignment seeks to usher Sri Lanka into a new era of rapid AI innovation.  (artificial intelligence in srilanka. The Rise of AI in Sri Lankan Workplaces

Sri Lanka's corporate sector is increasingly embracing artificial intelligence (AI) and automation, particularly in human resources (HR), where repetitive tasks such as payroll processing, recruitment, and employee engagement are being automated.  This move increases productivity, lowers costs, and enables HR professionals to concentrate on strategic decision-making.

AI Adoption in Srilankan Companies

Numerous Sri Lankan businesses have effectively incorporated AI-powered tools:

1.Chatbots driven by AI are used by Dialog Axiata to improve customer satisfaction and response times   (Ceylon Today, 2025).

2.With AI-based solutions like "HireVue," John Keells Holdings automates the hiring process,   decreasing hiring bias and expediting the candidate screening process.

3.To improve financial security, Commercial Bank of Ceylon uses AI for risk assessment and fraud     detection (Daily FT, 2023).

Not only private companies but also government companies cancan thrive in the market if they adjust to the current automation and artificial intelligence landscape.(State-owned banks in Sri Lanka are now slowly adapting to the IT and automation environment.)

Benefits of AI for HR in Sri Lanka

Many of the issues that Sri Lankan businesses, especially SMEs, encounter could be resolved by implementing AI and automation in HR.  Businesses may increase operational effectiveness, boost employee engagement, Employee's job satisfaction , and make data-driven decisions that support long-term success by adopting these technologies.  But for implementation to be effective, money must be spent on training, technology, and a dedication to matching AI solutions with corporate objectives and cultural norms. Sri Lanka can also travel together in the business world with modern technology.

Conclusion

Efficiency is increased by tools like chatbots and AI screeners, yet issues like data security and staff adaption still exist. The secret is to combine human knowledge with technology to create a more intelligent, future-ready workplace. Businesses must make upskilling investments as usage increases in order to fully utilize AI.

Human-machine collaboration is the way of the future in human resources.Sri Lanka is no exception to this.
